Increase in Intern Doctors’ Allowance: Good News Before Eid
After a prolonged agitation, intern doctors have finally received good news. The government has decided to increase their allowance from April onwards, raising it from 15 thousand to 20 thousand taka per month. Currently, intern doctors in government medical colleges and hospitals receive a monthly allowance of 15 thousand taka.
A notice issued by the Health Service Department on Monday (April 8) conveyed this information. According to the notice, the monthly allowance for recruited intern doctors has been increased from 5 thousand to 20 thousand taka using the unspent funds from the revised budget of the fiscal year 2023-24. As a result, an additional 31 crore 80 lakh taka has been allocated to the Health Ministry’s favor. This increased rate will be effective from April 1.
Postgraduate trainees and intern doctors had jointly protested four times demanding salary increments. Their demands included raising the salary of intern doctors to 30 thousand taka and increasing the salary of postgraduate private trainee doctors to 50 thousand taka.
In addition to this, their demands included:
– Payment of outstanding dues to postgraduate trainee doctors (FCPS, Residents, and Non-Residents).
– Reversal of the decision to suspend the emergency allowances for non-resident and resident doctors at 12 private institutes.
– Enactment of doctor protection laws.
The decision to increase the allowance of intern doctors has been welcomed by the protesters. However, they have also expressed their desire for the swift implementation of the remaining demands.
