“Two individuals, including the son of Amzad Hossen from Vottobaliyaghata in Sadar Upazila of Bagerhat and Arafat Sheikh, son of Saheb Ali from Botiyaghata in Khulna, were apprehended by the police on Saturday night. A case has been filed against the detainees, and legal proceedings will be initiated in court.
The apprehended individuals are identified as the 44-year-old son of Amzad Hossen and Arafat Sheikh, who was formerly associated with the Coast Guard. Amzad Hossen is the husband of a female Union Parishad member from Khanpur Union in Sadar Upazila. His wife, the Union Parishad member, is alleged to be involved in various criminal activities, including extortion, illegal activities related to the moon, and false accusations.
According to the police, on Saturday evening, two van drivers named Siam and Salman were buying scrap from a village. As they reached near the Vottobaliyaghata Bridge, Amzad Hossen and Arafat Sheikh, identifying themselves as police officers, obstructed the van’s movement, claiming that stolen goods were in their possession. Later, they extorted 20,000 taka for releasing the van. When the van drivers were questioned by local traders in the market, Amzad and Arafat attempted to flee. The locals, suspecting their activities, detained them and informed the police.
The incident has been reported to the Bagerhat Model Police Station, and an investigation is ongoing. Nishi Kant Sarkar, the OC of Bagerhat Model Police Station, stated that the detained individuals will face legal action. It has been revealed that the detainees were involved in various criminal activities in the past. Rupsa Upazila’s Helal Badi, the brother of van driver Salman, filed a case in the police station regarding the incident.”
