Mourning Over the Death of Veteran Journalist Alhaj Kayes Chowdhury, Burial Held

Veteran journalist and human rights activist Alhaj Kayes Chowdhury (70) from Jagannathpur, Sunamganj, is no more. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un. At the time of his death, he left behind his wife, four sons, one daughter, and numerous relatives and admirers. He passed away on Tuesday (September 16) at 10:30 PM while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sylhet city. His demise has cast a shadow of grief across the upazila.

As the news of his death spread, relatives, friends, longtime colleagues, and fellow journalists broke down in tears. On Wednesday at 11:00 AM, his funeral prayer (Janazah) was held at the Shahi Eidgah field of his native village, Jahirpur, Asharkandi Union. The prayer was led by Hazrat Maulana Noyaz Ahmad. People from various walks of life—including political leaders, public representatives, journalists, and members of civil society—were present to pay their last respects.

Meanwhile, expressing deep sorrow and condolences to the bereaved family, the Jagannathpur Journalists Forum mourned the passing of Alhaj Kayes Chowdhury. In a condolence message, Forum President Humayun Kabir and General Secretary Golam Sarwar said that Kayes Chowdhury was not only a crime journalist but also a true humanitarian.

He earned wide recognition in journalism and remained active in the profession with honesty and dedication until his last breath, working tirelessly for the welfare of the country and its people. He was a devoted, sincere, and humble person. His death marks an irreparable loss for the journalism community and the region—one that cannot be easily filled.
