“On the day of the election, the metro rail will operate, what is the decision on other public transport?
Dhaka, January 6: To facilitate the voters’ journey to the polling centers on the day of the 12th National Parliamentary Election, various public transports will be operational. In the capital, the metro rail will operate normally on this day. On Thursday, the Upazila Project Director (Public Relations) of Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project Line-6 has confirmed this.
On this day, the public transport, private cars, and CNG-run autorickshaws will be allowed to operate. However, microbuses and motorcycles will not be in operation. This preparation may assist the Election Commission and the government in ensuring the easy movement of voters to the polling centers. On December 31, the Road Transport and Highways Division announced in a notice that it will suspend the operation of five types of vehicles on the day of the election. Taxi, cab, pick-up, microbus, and truck will not be operational on the day of the election, while motorcycles will be suspended for three days.
Permission for Public Transport:
1. Law enforcement agencies, armed forces, administration, and authorized inspectors can operate vehicles.
2. Vehicles engaged in emergency services and those used for medicine, health care, and similar purposes can move.
3. Vehicles carrying immediate family members to the airport, or returning to their residence from the airport, are allowed.
4. One vehicle for each opposing candidate and permission to operate motorcycles used by returning workers with authorization and display of stickers.
5. Journalists, observers, or motorcycles used in emergency work can move.
6. Vehicles returning workers with permission from the Election Commission and displaying stickers can operate.
7. District magistrates can use vehicles for the expeditious execution of the election or impose restrictions on certain vehicles for the exigency or take effective measures in connection with the practical needs and realities.
The Road Transport and Highways Division and district magistrates are empowered to impose restrictions or relaxations regarding the prohibition of traffic on important roads, highways, and main connecting roads, excluding national highways and ports, and take necessary effective measures in consideration of local needs and practicalities.”
