Former Chairman and 3 Others Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Jhalakathi Youth Murder Case
Jhalakathi: Four people, including Kabir Hossain (40), former chairman of Mollarhat Union Council in Nalchity upazila, Jhalakathi, and his brother Delowar Hossain Hawladar (45), have been sentenced to life imprisonment for hacking a young man, Saidul Islam, to death.
The verdict was pronounced on Wednesday (June 12, 2024) afternoon by Judge Md. Rohibul Islam of Jhalakathi District and Sessions Judge Court in the presence of the accused.
Judge Md. Rohibul Islam said in his verdict, “The accused premeditatedly and conspired to kill the deceased Saidul Islam. They have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their crime.”
The other convicts are:
- Mohammed Alamgir (38)
- Md. Abdul Mannan (42)
Incident Description:
Saidul Islam was hacked to death in broad daylight on March 14, 2022, at the market in Mollarhat Union Council, Nalchity upazila, Jhalakathi. Police arrested four people, including former chairman Kabir Hossain, on charges of involvement in the incident.
Case Background:
The family of the deceased, Saidul Islam, filed a case against former chairman Kabir Hossain and three others.
Judge’s Observation:
Judge Md. Rohibul Islam said in his verdict, “According to the evidence and the court’s judgment, the deceased Saidul Islam had a long-standing conflict with former chairman Kabir Hossain. Due to this conflict, they conspired and killed Saidul Islam.”
Lawyers’ Statements:
The lawyer for the deceased, Md. Abdul Khaled, said, “We are satisfied with the court’s verdict.”
On the other hand, the lawyer for the accused, Md. Jahangir Alam, said, “We will appeal against the verdict.”
It is to be noted that the youth murder incident in Jhalakathi’s Nalchity upazila caused widespread tension in the area. The family of the deceased expressed their satisfaction after the court’s verdict.
