‘Artificial rain’ every day in the capital, relief in Davdah!
Dhaka, April 26th: To combat the scorching heat and control rising temperatures, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has initiated an “artificial rain” program. Residents will experience simulated showers for six hours daily, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Several areas across the city including Uttara, Mirpur, Farmgate, and Agargaon will witness this “artificial rain.” The DNCC is utilizing large water cannons to create a fine mist and bring down the city’s heat. Approximately 400,000 liters of water are dispersed daily using two spray cannons and ten sprinklers.
Seeking respite from the unbearable heat, many residents were seen enjoying the cool sensation of the “artificial rain” and getting themselves wet.
Bushra Afrin, the Chief Heat Officer of the DNCC, acknowledged that increasing greenery in the city is necessary for long-term temperature control. However, she emphasized the importance of taking immediate action. “While expanding green cover takes time, we haven’t opted to wait idly by. Therefore, we’ve taken this initiative to generate artificial rain using water cannons, offering temporary relief and lowering the temperature for a brief period,” she explained.
The DNCC intends to continue this “artificial rain” program throughout the entire heatwave, providing temporary moments of cool comfort during the scorching days.
This initiative has garnered significant interest among city dwellers. Many believe it will help alleviate the intensity of the heatwave to some extent.
However, some experts caution that “artificial rain” is not a long-term solution. They advocate for increasing tree plantation and controlling environmental pollution for sustainable temperature management.
Only time will tell how effective the DNCC’s initiative proves to be. Nevertheless, it’s a positive step expected to provide some relief to residents from the sweltering heat.
