Padma Bridge Generates Daily Revenue of 2.18 Crore Taka: Prime Minister

 

Dhaka: In response to a written question from Member of Parliament Nurun Nabi Chowdhury on February 7th, 2024, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina informed the Parliament that the Padma Bridge has collected a total toll of 1,270 crore 81 lakh taka since its inauguration 19 months ago. This translates to a daily average revenue of 2.18 crore taka.

Prime Minister’s remarks:

  • Padma Bridge is a symbol of national pride and capability.
  • The bridge was officially inaugurated on June 25th, 2022, and opened to traffic the following day.
  • From June 26th, 2022, to January 24th, 2024, toll collection from vehicles crossing the bridge amounted to 1,270 crore 81 lakh 34 thousand 350 taka.
  • In one year alone, the revenue was 798 crore 23 lakh 16 thousand taka, with a daily average of nearly 2.18 crore taka.

Economic impact of Padma Bridge:

  • Established seamless connectivity between Dhaka and the eastern region with the 19 southern districts.
  • Generated employment for about 1.4% of the workforce annually.
  • Reduced nationwide poverty by 0.84%.
  • Increased GDP growth – 2.5% in the south and 1.23% overall.

Prime Minister further added:

  • The bridge will connect to the Trans-Asian Railway and Highway networks.
  • This will accelerate trade, industrialization, and tourism.
  • The socio-economic landscape of the southwestern region has already transformed, witnessing significant development activity.

It is noteworthy that the Padma Bridge is the longest bridge in Bangladesh and one of the longest river bridges in the world.
