Long Queues at Polling Centers as Voting Kicks Off in Twelfth National Parliamentary Election

On January 7th, the Twelfth National Parliamentary Election commenced at 8 am, leading to long queues of voters at various polling centers. Shortly after the voting began, Awami League’s Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cast her vote at Dhaka City College center, accompanied by her family.

Expressing gratitude to the voters, Sheikh Hasina thanked them for their support and expressed readiness to form the government with their backing. She pledged to showcase Bangladesh as a developed nation and emphasized the importance of this commitment.

With a total of 299 seats up for grabs in this election, the voting process is expected to conclude shortly. Despite challenges like rain, Gaibandha, Jhenaidah, and Kishoreganj are experiencing a peaceful electoral environment. The voter turnout, though slightly affected by the rain, is gradually increasing as the day progresses.

In Gaibandha, Jhenaidah, and Kishoreganj, candidates from various parties are actively participating in the electoral contest, with a total of 26 candidates in the fray. The voter count stands at 2,533,685, comprising 1,293,414 males, 1,240,255 females, and 16 third-gender voters.

This election involves nearly 120 million voters who will determine the next leaders of the country. Twenty-eight parties, including BNP and Sammilito Jatiya Jote, are participating, with a total of 1,969 candidates in the race.
