Khulna: Dozens of families in the Shiromoni Gila tla area of Khulna have been victims of a scam involving free SIM cards and attractive offers. After registering SIMs using their National ID cards and biometric information, the scammers are using those SIMs to commit cybercrimes such as online fraud, extortion, and ransom demands.
Incident Details:
- On March 13th, a young man named Rakib visited the Gila tla area, promising free SIM cards to attract residents.
- Using offers to lure them in, he collected National ID cards and biometric information from 50-60 people, including Laily Begum, to register SIM cards.
- Shortly after, citing unclear fingerprints as an excuse, he left without giving SIMs to most people.
- A SIM card registered under Laily Begum’s name was used by Rakibul Islam Rakib from Dinajpur to commit online fraud and steal 8,000 taka.
- Rakib filed a fraud case against Laily Begum.
- The affected families have filed complaints with the Khan Jahan Ali police station.
