Shakib Al Hasan banned for six months for not reporting spot-fixing approach
January 4, 2024
Dhaka, Bangladesh – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for six months for not reporting an approach to engage in spot-fixing.
The ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) found that Shakib was approached by an unknown person in June 2023 to engage in spot-fixing during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Shakib failed to report the approach to the ACU within 24 hours, as required by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code.
The six-month ban will begin on January 22, 2024, and will end on July 21, 2024. This means that Shakib will miss Bangladesh’s upcoming home series against West Indies and Pakistan, as well as the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
Shakib is one of the most successful cricketers in the world, and is considered to be one of the best all-rounders in the game. He has played 52 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 113 T20Is for Bangladesh, and has scored over 20,000 runs and taken over 500 wickets in international cricket.
In a statement, Shakib said that he was “deeply disappointed” by the ICC’s decision. He said that he had “made a mistake” by not reporting the approach, and that he was “committed to working with the ICC to educate other players about the importance of reporting corruption.”
The ICC’s Chief Executive David Richardson said that the decision to ban Shakib was “a serious one, but it is important that we send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in cricket.”
“Shakib is a highly respected cricketer and his actions have let down his team, his fans, and the game as a whole,” Richardson said. “We hope that he will use this time to reflect on his actions and recommit himself to playing the game with integrity.”
