The Health Department has issued a public advisory recommending heightened mask usage following the emergence of the new variant of the COVID-19 virus, J.N.1. According to a statement from the Coordinated Control Center at the Health Department, the global spread of the J.N.1 variant has raised concerns. In light of this situation, individuals in high-risk areas, such as hospitals, medical centers, and those with compromised immune systems, are urged to exercise caution by wearing masks.
Simultaneously, individuals in high-risk categories are advised to consider receiving the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Health Department has emphasized this recommendation for individuals showing symptoms or signs of COVID-19, particularly those involved in surgical or medical treatments. This advisory aligns with the suggestions made by the National Advisory Committee on COVID-19 during their meeting on January 4.
For more information on these guidelines, Dr. Nazmul Islam, the Director (Disease Control) at the Health Department, stated, “Those working in hospitals, individuals with respiratory infections, and those with weakened immune systems are advised to wear masks. This is a precautionary measure, and there is no need for widespread panic.”
Regarding the vaccination drive, Dr. Islam mentioned that seven lakh doses of the Pfizer vaccine have arrived in the country. These doses will be prioritized for healthcare workers and high-risk groups to ensure their safety. He also indicated that a decision on vaccinating the entire population has not been finalized.
