“Following in the footsteps of my father, I address the United Nations in Bengali,” said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while inaugurating the Ekushey Book Fair at the Bangla Academy building on Thursday afternoon (February 1).
The Prime Minister stated that after Bangladesh received recognition from the United Nations as an independent country in 1974, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed the UN in Bengali. She emphasized that in that speech, Bangabandhu had taken Bengali to the international level.

Sheikh Hasina further mentioned that just as Rabindranath Tagore brought international recognition to the language within the realm of poetry, similarly, Bangabandhu had elevated political, social, economic, and liberation struggles to the international stage through his speeches in Bengali.
Following the path of her father, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her determination to address the United Nations in Bengali.
Highlighting the importance of reading, she urged the younger generation to cultivate the habit of reading, emphasizing that tackling difficult essays and complex subjects helps to sharpen one’s mind. She shared her own preference for challenging books and acknowledged the significance of book fairs in promoting reading habits.

Referring to her own experience, Sheikh Hasina mentioned her fondness for the library of Dhaka University during her student life. She emphasized the need to expand the reach of book fairs and suggested creating a separate portal for the Bengali Academy to promote literature in various languages digitally.
Regarding the digital transformation, she asserted that to advance Bangla as a cultural language, it is essential to utilize modern technology. She suggested that publishers should focus on digital publication to ensure the global accessibility of Bengali literature.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the role of language in fostering cultural connections, and she declared the theme of a ‘Digital Bangladesh.’ She stressed the importance of combining language, literature, and culture with digital advancements to build a smart nation.
Following the distribution of awards in various literary categories, Sheikh Hasina unveiled several new books, including ‘Collected Works of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman: Volume 2,’ during the book fair’s inauguration.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing her commitment to elevating Bangladesh’s position globally, inspired by the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The book fair, she declared, would remain open from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm on regular days and from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on government holidays, with a one-hour break for lunch and prayer.”
