Extreme Cold Sweeps Across 13 Districts in Bangladesh
Date: January 13, 2024
The temperature has dropped even further, extending the reach of the cold wave across the country. While on Friday, mild cold waves were reported in four districts, today, Saturday, it has spread to 13 districts. The temperature range has decreased due to dense fog and the cold northern winds, creating an intense winter experience nationwide. Even the residents of the capital city, Dhaka, are feeling the chill.
As per the information from the Meteorological Department, when the minimum temperature stays between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius for a specific period across a widespread area, it is termed as mild cold waves. If the temperature falls between 6 to 8 degrees, it is considered moderate, and if it drops to 4 to 6 degrees, it is categorized as severe cold waves.
Due to the dense fog, sunlight is not reaching most parts of the country during the day, contributing to a significant decrease in daytime temperatures. In some regions, the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures is less than 5 degrees Celsius. In Dhaka, the temperature range is recorded at 4.8 degrees Celsius.
The cold breeze from the north is bringing frosty conditions, leading to a severe winter sensation across the nation. From Saturday morning, the sky in Dhaka has remained overcast, with no sight of the sun until noon. On Friday, the lowest temperature in the country was recorded at 8.8 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur. The previous day, it was 9.6 degrees Celsius in Nokhali and Chuadanga.
The meteorological forecast for the next 24 hours, starting from 9 AM Saturday, anticipates dry weather with partially cloudy skies throughout the country. However, moderate to dense fog may persist, causing temporary disruptions in air, water, and road transportation in certain areas.
The districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Chuadanga, and Kushtia in the northern division (comprising 8 districts) are currently experiencing a mild cold wave. The meteorological department suggests that this mild cold wave may continue without significant changes. However, towards the end of the week, there is a possibility of rain or thunderstorms, indicating a potential shift in the weather pattern.
In summary, the cold wave has intensified across Bangladesh, affecting 13 districts with a substantial drop in temperatures. The situation is expected to persist in the coming days, with a chance of precipitation towards the end of the week. The residents are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the severe winter conditions.
