Clash over the place of Eid congregation, 30 injured

Netrokona, Kendra: On Thursday morning (April 11), a long-standing dispute over the location of Eid-ul-Fitr prayers erupted into a violent clash between two groups in Keradighi village, leaving at least 30 people injured.

10 of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. They were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment after receiving primary care. The remaining injured are being treated at local health centers.

Origin of the clash:

According to local sources, the dispute over the location of Eid prayers has been going on for a long time in Keradighi village of Royailbari Amtala union of Kendua upazila. One group was in favor of offering prayers at the old Eidgah ground in the village. The other group was in favor of offering prayers at the village mosque ground to avoid traffic congestion. There have been several rounds of verbal altercations between the two groups over this issue.

Details of the clash:

On the day of Eid, preparations were underway to offer prayers at the designated location around 9:30 am. At that time, another argument broke out over the location of the prayers. The argument escalated into a scuffle and then a full-blown clash. People from both sides armed with crude weapons attacked each other.

Police statement:

Kendua police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enamul Haque said that after receiving the news of the clash, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area. An investigation into the incident has been launched.

Arrangements are being made for the treatment of the injured, including those in critical condition. Additionally, strict vigilance has been imposed in the area to prevent any further untoward incidents.

Local chairman’s concern:

Nurul Alam Kajal, the UP member of the ward concerned, said that the locals were unable to offer Eid prayers properly due to this incident. He expressed concern about the possibility of further unrest in the area.
