Description of the Incident:
Sazzad Rahman was returning home with his mother from the Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where a relative was undergoing treatment. Upon reaching the intersection of Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road, the child started running across the road. At that moment, a police jeep from the Palongkhali Station of the 8th Armed Police Battalion hit the child.
Injured, the child was taken to the Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians pronounced him dead.
Police Statement: Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamim Hossen confirmed the incident and stated that a police team visited the scene. The accident occurred due to the child’s recklessness in running across the road. Following legal procedures, the child’s body was handed over to his relatives.
Criticism: Local residents have expressed deep concern over this incident. Allegations have been raised against the police for reckless driving. Although acknowledging the child’s recklessness, locals have demanded vigilance from the police as well. They have urged for legal action against the police if found guilty.
