BUET students demand: The campus should be free from politics
DHAKA: Ordinary students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to intervene and keep the university free from politics.
They made this demand during a press briefing held on Tuesday (April 2) afternoon in front of the university’s registrar building.

Politics Hinders Academic Progress
The students stated that campus politics are hindering their intellectual development and academic progress. They emphasized that a politics-free environment is essential for educational advancement. They added they would take the initiative themselves to stop any extremist activities on campus.
Appeal Against Student Politics
The general students made a fervent plea to the Prime Minister to keep BUET outside the purview of student politics.

Abrar Fahad Murder and History of Political Ban
In October 2019, student Abrar Fahad was killed due to torture by members of the then BUET unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (student wing of a political party). Ordinary students launched widespread protests against this incident. Subsequently, on October 11, 2019, BUET authorities issued a notification banning all political party activities on campus.
High Court Order and Appeal Demand
Last Monday (April 1), the High Court suspended the notification prohibiting political party activities at BUET.
The students have urged the BUET vice-chancellor to file an appeal against this verdict.
Long-Standing Demand
Keeping the BUET campus free from politics has been a long-standing demand. This demand has grown stronger following the Abrar Fahad murder.
