Bus Falls Off Flyover in Odisha, 5 Killed, 40 Injured

  April 15: A passenger bus lost control and plunged off a flyover in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district near Barabati area on Monday night. Five people were killed and around 40 others injured in the incident.

The deceased include four men and one woman. Police in their initial investigation said that the bus was carrying over 50 passengers.

The bus was going from Puri to Kolkata. The driver lost control while ascending a flyover on National Highway-16. This resulted in the bus falling off the flyover.

Locals rushed to the spot to help rescue the injured. A team of police and fire officials also reached the spot and began rescue operations.

Ten of the injured are said to be critical. They have been admitted to the local Dharmashala Hospital. The remaining injured have been taken to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He condoled the deaths and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Cause of the Accident:

The police are investigating the cause of the accident. Initial guess is that the driver lost control, leading to the mishap.
